Biography
Dr. Jaimie Borisoff is a principal investigator at the International Collaboration On Repair Discoveries (ICORD) and the Canadian Research Chair in Rehabilitation Engineering Design at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). He is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at the University of British Columbia.
Dr. Borisoff focuses his research on older adults and how technology development can improve the lives of people with spinal cord injury and other disabilities. One focus of his work is on expanding these peoples' ability to participate more fully in all aspects of society, including outdoor natural environments. This work includes the development of the Elevation™ wheelchair with "on the fly" seating adjustability, and the SWIVL™ "stow and roll" front wheel attachment to manual wheelchairs. His work also focusses on adaptive exercise, which includes the development of the "aROW" and "aSKI" rowing machines and the AAPLEwalk™—a novel supported-walking exercise machine for people with mobility impairments. Rehabilitation engineering design looks at gaps in quality of life and how people use devices in real life and, from these observations, designs better technology. In the long term, Dr. Borisoff wants to continue to commercialize his lab's work in order to increase the market solutions that can improve the lives of people with disabilities or mobility impairments due to aging.
