This evidence-based, interactive seminar introduces researchers to the typical organizational structure of the Introduction to a research article in the STEM disciplines, while accounting for variation in disciplinary differences within STEM. That is, some stylistic features of academic writing remain constant across STEM disciplines, while others vary to account for discipline-specific norms.
The Introduction offers an opportunity for writers to begin to tell their research story by reviewing the literature, stating the research gap or problem, and taking their own conversational or storytelling turn. But how do writers persuade readers that the research gap/problem is consequential? Participants will draft or revise a research article Introduction during dedicated writing time.
This workshop is part of our VCHRI Research Training Series. This series is designed to support the acquisition of advanced skills, techniques and knowledge and lead to enhanced practices in the conduct of research.
Learning objectives
By the end of the seminar, you will be better positioned to do the following:
- Write an Introduction that 1) provides readers with the relevant background context and literature review; 2) identifies the gap, problem, or need your study addresses; and 3) states the purpose or objective of the current research
