Biography
Dr. Jian (James) Ye is a cardiovascular surgeon at St. Paul’s Hospital and Vancouver General Hospital. He is also a clinical professor of surgery and the director of cardiac surgery research at the University of British Columbia. His sub-specialty is mitral and tricuspid valve repair and transcatheter heart valve therapies. He has developed and established complex mitral and tricuspid valve repair program at St. Paul’s Hospital and has been providing valve repair in more than 98 per cent of patients with degenerative mitral valve disease and various tricuspid valve disease. He has also been providing complex valve repair for rheumatic mitral and tricuspid valve disease.
Dr. Ye is a pioneer in the development and clinical application of transcatheter heart valve therapies, and has performed over 15 first-in-human transcatheter heart valve procedures, including: the first successful transapical transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) in the world in 2005; transcatheter aortic valve-in-valve implantation for failed bioprosthesis in 2007; TAVI for pure aortic regurgitation; transcatheter mitral valve repair or replacement; and transcatheter tricuspid valve therapy. Dr. Ye has educated physicians around the world in TAVI and surgical mitral & tricuspid valve repair. He has supervised many transcatheter aortic and mitral valve procedures throughout North America, Asia and Australia. His research interests include clinical outcomes of conventional and transcatheter heart valve surgery, and the development and clinical application of new medical devices. He has participated as a site principal investigator in many multi-centre clinical trials in cardiac surgery and transcatheter heart valve therapies. He has authored and co-authored over 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers and six book chapters, and has been a reviewer for many high tier journals. Dr. Ye has also been invited to give over 100 lecturers at numerous scientific meetings worldwide.
