Purpose of Study
To test our predictions concerning differences between men and women in their abilities to be flexible in looking at familiar things in new ways, stay focused, and resist their initial response to give a wiser, more considered response instead—and in how mild stress (concern to perform well) affects that. We examine this mostly through short, fun computer games.
Eligibility
Inclusion Criteria:
- Health men and women between the ages of 20-35
- Free of any neurological impairment or disorder, learning disability, or psychological syndrome that might affect EF performance (such as ADHD)
- Able to understand English well enough to understand the task instructions.
- No difficulty hearing the instructions, seeing the stimuli, or executing a manual response.
- No injury (such as a head injury with loss of consciousness) that might affect EF performance.
- Not taking any medication that affects thinking, memory, mental clarity, or any other EF ability.
Additional inclusion criteria relevant only to women:
- Should have a regular period that occurs roughly every month, as predicting the onset of the next menses in women who don’t have their period monthly is difficult.
- Should not be pregnant
- Should not be nursing
- Should not be on oral contraceptives now, or anytime within the last 4 months
